Rapid quantification of intact Legionella in water samples
The rqmicro Legionella Count Kits enable rapid and quantitative detection of intact Legionella cells directly from water samples. Combined with the rqmicro.COUNT instrument, the assays deliver standardized flow cytometry results within hours, providing cultivation-independent measurements of Legionella contamination.
Unlike conventional culture methods, rqmicro detects both culturable and viable but non-culturable (VBNC) Legionella cells, offering a more complete assessment of microbial presence and potential health risk.
The Legionella Count Kits are available in three assay formats to match different monitoring requirements:
- Legionella pneumophila Serogroup 1
- Legionella pneumophila Serogroups 1–15
- Legionella spp.

Traditional cultivation methods only recover Legionella cells capable of forming colonies under laboratory conditions. However, water systems frequently contain viable but non-culturable (VBNC) Legionella that remain metabolically active but are not detected by culture.
The rqmicro Legionella Count Kits quantify intact Legionella cells—including VBNC populations—to provide a more comprehensive understanding of contamination levels. This enables water system operators and microbiology laboratories to detect microbial changes earlier, improve risk assessments, and generate quantitative data that supports informed operational and scientific decisions.

The Legionella Count Kits are designed for rapid laboratory analysis with minimal hands-on time.

Prepare the sample
Concentrate sample from 100 mL to 1 mL using filtration. Add resuspended microorganisms from the filter into the Legionella Reaction Tube.

Reaction
Allow the sample to react with the staining reagents for 60 minutes at room temperature.

Measure
Transfer the sample from the Legionella Reaction Tube to the rqmicro.COUNT Cartridge. Register the sample in the instrument and start the analysis.

Retrieve Results
Retrieve Legionella cell concentrations in cells/100 mL on the instrument and on the Cloud Solution.
